Creating an ad with AI: a practical guide for small businesses

What AI does very well, its pitfalls (distorted text, altered product) and a 5-step method to create your ad visuals with AI, without being a designer.

By Kaleido Ads

Just a few years ago, a good-looking ad required a photographer, a designer or an agency. Today, artificial intelligence lets a shop owner, a coach or a small brand create a professional ad in minutes. Provided you know what AI does well, and where it goes wrong. Here is a practical, jargon-free guide.

What AI does very well

  • Creating a setting: a clean studio, a bright bathroom, a sunny terrace. No need to rent a location or organize a photo shoot.
  • Fixing the lighting: a phone photo taken in a dark corner can become a well-lit scene.
  • Producing variations: several moods for the same offer, to test side by side.
  • Adapting formats: square, Story, banner, by recomposing the scene for each aspect ratio.

The pitfalls to know

Distorted text

Ask an image generator to write “20% off this week” and you will often get twisted letters or typos. For an ad, that’s a deal-breaker. The good practice: generate the image without text, then place the headline and button on top, with a real font.

An altered product

If you simply describe “a serum bottle”, the AI will invent a bottle that isn’t yours. To sell your product, start from a photo of it: a good tool keeps its shape, colors and label, and only recreates the scene around it.

Complicated prompts

General-purpose tools ask you to write long instructions and try again until you get the right result. For a small business, a guided form (offer, mood, headline) saves a lot of time.

Platform rules

An image created with AI is still an ad: it must follow Meta’s and Google’s rules and promise nothing your product doesn’t deliver. Also check each platform’s rules on AI-generated content.

The 5-step method

  1. Start from a real photo of your product, your place or your team. Even taken with a phone, it’s enough, as long as the subject is visible.
  2. Describe your offer in one sentence, for example: “vitamin C glow serum for dull skin, made in Quebec”.
  3. Choose a mood: a clean studio, a real-life scene, or a colorful graphic style.
  4. Keep the text out of the generated image: a 3 to 6 word headline and a button, placed afterwards.
  5. Adapt and test: create the formats you need, launch two or three moods with a small budget, then keep the one that performs best.

How to choose your tool

  • Product fidelity: does your product stay recognizable?
  • Clean text: is the headline set with a real font, and editable afterwards?
  • Ad formats: does the tool directly produce Meta and Google sizes?
  • Price per visual and the possibility to try before paying.

What Kaleido Ads does

Kaleido Ads was designed for exactly this case. You describe your offer once, with a photo, a few words, or both. The AI recreates the scene (lighting, angle, setting) while keeping your product, then the headline, button, colors and logo are placed cleanly on each format, with no distorted letters. The text stays editable for free. Already have an ad that works? Drop it in: the tool adapts it to every format.

The first visual is free, no credit card required.
